Hexagram 33 Withdrawal in love and relationships

retreatwithdrawalstrategic distance

Dun is heaven drawing away from the mountain: the four yang lines are withdrawing upward while two yin lines rise beneath them. The Great Image says the superior person 'keeps small people at a distance, not with hatred but with dignity' (不惡而嚴). For a relationship this is a hexagram of distance — not necessarily of ending, but of stepping back from something that is encroaching, whether a pressure from outside, a pattern that has started to crowd out what was good, or a bond that needs air.

The lines show how differently that distance can be taken. Line two holds fast to the one it belongs with, 'bound with the hide of a yellow ox', and is the hexagram's picture of loyalty inside a retreat. Line three cannot leave because of its attachments and is worn down. Line four withdraws from what it loves because it must, and five and six withdraw cleanly and well. Read a changing line as the quality of the distance you are taking: entangled, reluctant, or free.

The hexagram in brief

Heaven withdrawing from the mountain: retreat in good time. Yin grows, and the wise step back with dignity — success through retreat, small advantage in persevering.

Withdraw early and gracefully, keeping distance from the petty without hatred; a good retreat preserves what matters.

The judgment

遯:亨,小利貞。

Thun indicates successful progress (in its circumstances). To a small extent it will (still) be advantageous to be firm and correct.
