Hexagram 51 Shock (Thunder) for work and career

shockthunderawakening

At work Zhen is the sudden event: a reorganisation, a reprimand, a project upended overnight. The Great Image shows the superior person responding to repeated thunder by 'fearing, trembling, cultivating and examining himself' — the shock is to be used for self-correction, not for panic or for blame. The Tuan praises the one who still presides at the sacrifice while the thunder rolls: whoever keeps the essential task in hand through the disruption ends up trusted with it.

The lines are the range of reactions. One turns alarm into a new rule; two drops what cannot be held and waits for it to return; three uses the fright to leave an unsuitable position. Four is the energetic response that sinks into mud and changes nothing; five keeps its duties in the centre while the shocks come and go; six is fear become exhaustion, where action would be a mistake. A changing line in the lower trigram is the first clap, with time to find footing; one in the upper trigram is the second, where the question is whether you have any.

The hexagram in brief

Thunder upon thunder: shock. It arrives with alarm and is followed by laughter; the shock shakes a hundred miles, yet the sacrificial spoon is not dropped.

Let the jolt wake you rather than scatter you; examine yourself, keep your composure, and keep the essential thing in hand.

The judgment

震:亨。震來虩虩,笑言啞啞。震驚百里,不喪匕鬯。

Kăn gives the intimation of ease and development. When (the time of) movement (which it indicates) comes, (the subject of the hexagram) will be found looking out with apprehension, and yet smiling and talking cheerfully. When the movement (like a crash of thunder) terrifies all within a hundred lî, he will be (like the sincere worshipper) who is not (startled into) letting go his ladle and (cup of) sacrificial spirits.
