Hexagram 64 Not Yet Crossed for work and career

before completiontransitionthe unfinished

At work Wei Ji is the project in its last and most dangerous phase: mostly done, nothing delivered, everyone a little tired. The Great Image gives the method — the superior person 'carefully distinguishes things and the places they belong' — because when every line is out of position, sorting what goes where is the whole task. The Judgment promises success and immediately shows the fox that got careless at the end; the Tuan says the failure is 'not continuing to the end'.

The lines are a schedule. Line one rushes in without scoping; line two can push and waits for the leader's call; line three should cross with support, not alone. Line four is the breakthrough into the long campaign that earns recognition; line five is the leader whose clarity and trust carry the team; the top line is the celebration that goes one drink too far. A changing line in the lower trigram usually means the hard part is still ahead; one in the upper means you are through it and must sustain effort and measure.

The hexagram in brief

Fire over water, every line out of place: not yet across. Success is possible — but the little fox, nearly over, wets its tail; nothing is favourable yet. The Book ends with the crossing still ahead.

You are close, not done: discern carefully, keep your resources dry, and finish with the same care you started with.

The judgment

未濟:亨,小狐汔濟,濡其尾,无攸利。

Wei Žî intimates progress and success (in the circumstances which it implies). (We see) a young fox that has nearly crossed (the stream), when its tail gets immersed. There will be no advantage in any way.
