Hexagram 1 Heaven in love and relationships

strengthinitiativecreative power

Qian is pure yang: six strong lines, heaven doubled, the dragon rising through the sky. It is not a hexagram of tenderness but of strength and initiative, and in a question about a relationship it describes a bond driven by one party's force of character — someone who leads, declares, builds, and expects to be followed. The Great Image says the superior person 'strengthens himself without ceasing', and the risk for love is written in the top line: a dragon that only knows how to go higher ends in regret.

For a relationship the hexagram asks at what stage the energy is. The hidden dragon of line one is an attraction that should stay private for now; the field of line two is the time to be seen; the fifth line is a partnership at full strength. If the changing line is in the upper trigram, especially the top, the counsel is to soften: pure strength with no yielding line leaves no room for the other person to answer.

The hexagram in brief

Pure yang, six unbroken lines: heaven in ceaseless motion. Creative force and leadership, pictured as a dragon rising stage by stage — hidden, in the field, flying, and finally overreaching.

Act with integrity and persistence, but know which stage you are at: a hidden dragon waits, a flying dragon leads, an arrogant one regrets.

The judgment

乾:元亨,利貞。

Khien (represents) what is great and originating, penetrating, advantageous, correct and firm.
