Nine in the fourth place · 乾 qián

爻辭 The line text

或躍在淵,无咎。

In the fourth line, undivided, (we see its subject as the dragon looking) as if he were leaping up, but still in the deep. There will be no mistake.

Its symbolism
或躍在淵,進无咎也。

'He seems to be leaping up, but is still in the deep:'—if he advance, there will be no error.

In plain words

The dragon is back, poised over the deep: 'perhaps it leaps, or stays in the abyss.' The word 'perhaps' (或) is the whole line — the fourth place is the first step into the upper trigram, beside the ruler, and the dragon may rise or sink back without either being wrong. Yang in a yin place, not central, the line has freedom and no fixed footing. The small Image reads the leap kindly: to advance here is no blame (進無咎也). Cheng Yi stresses the testing: the superior person at this stage tries the moment and withdraws if it is not ripe, and the text gives no good or bad fortune because the outcome depends on that judgement.

If this line is changing

You may make your move or hold back, and either is defensible; test the ground once before committing, and be ready to drop back without embarrassment.

Where the line stands

  • A solid line, yang — written 九 (nine), the number of an old yang line that moves when cast.
  • It is not in its correct place (不當位): a yang line in an even position or a yin line in an odd one, which the tradition reads as a line under some strain — often the reason a text sounds a warning.
  • It belongs to the upper trigram 乾 Qian (the Creative) (heaven).
  • It has no correspondence (無應) with line 1: both lines are yang, so this line must find its support in its neighbours or in itself.

之卦 When this line moves
