Hexagram 35 Advancing in love and relationships

progressadvancementrecognition

Jin is the sun rising above the earth: brightness above, docility below, and the lower trigram's three yin lines rising together toward the light. The Judgment describes a prince received three times in a day — recognition, welcome, advancement in the open. For a relationship the hexagram speaks of a bond that is becoming visible and acknowledged, and of the attitude that makes acknowledgement possible: the Great Image's 'brighten your own bright virtue', being plainly what you are rather than manoeuvring.

The lower lines describe the early stages honestly. Line one is pushed back and not yet trusted, and is told to be generous rather than to push; line two is correct but lonely, and its blessing comes late and from above; line three is carried by the trust of others. The fourth line is the warning — someone clinging to a place in another's life without having earned it. The fifth is the hexagram's heart: affection that does not keep score. The top line turns its energy inward on its own household, which is where a long bond ends up anyway.

The hexagram in brief

The sun rising over the earth: progress. The capable prince is rewarded with horses and received three times in a day — advancement in the light.

Advance openly and brighten your own virtue; progress is steady when it is visible and deserved.

The judgment

晉:康侯用錫馬蕃庶,晝日三接。

In Žin we see a prince who secures the tranquillity (of the people) presented on that account with numerous horses (by the king), and three times in a day received at interviews.
