Hexagram 35, line 3
六三Line 3 of Advancing
Six in the third place · 晉 jìn
爻辭 The line text
眾允,悔亡。The third line, divided, shows its subject trusted by all (around him). All occasion for repentance will disappear.
眾允之,志上行也。'All (around) trust him:'—their (common) aim is to move upwards and act.
In plain words
All trust him, and regret disappears. Line three is yin in a yang place — not correct, which is where the regret comes from — at the top of Kun, the earth, leading the three yin lines upward toward the light of Li above. It is the spokesman for the group: the small Image says 'their shared will moves upward' (志上行). What saves this line from its faulty position is that it is not advancing for itself. The three obedient lines of the lower trigram are rising together toward the bright ruler, and a line carried by common consent has nothing to regret.
If this line is changing
Advance as the voice of the people who share your aim, not ahead of them; what you lack in standing is made up by their trust.
Where the line stands
- A broken line, yin — written 六 (six), the number of an old yin line that moves when cast.
- It is not in its correct place (不當位): a yang line in an even position or a yin line in an odd one, which the tradition reads as a line under some strain — often the reason a text sounds a warning.
- It belongs to the lower trigram 坤 Kun (the Receptive) (earth).
- It corresponds (應) with line 6: one yin and one yang, the two lines answer each other across the hexagram.
