Hexagram 45 for love

Hexagram 45 Assembly in love and relationships

gatheringassemblycommunity

Cui is the lake resting on the earth, waters collecting in a hollow: the hexagram of gathering. The Tuan reads it as 'compliance leading to joy, the strong at the centre answered' (順以說,剛中而應), and the judgment sets the scene at the ancestral temple — a gathering with a shared purpose, where the king meets the great man. In a relationship this is the picture of two people, or two families, coming together around something larger than themselves, and the Great Image's advice is to prepare for the frictions that gathering brings: 'repair your weapons, guard against the unforeseen' (除戎器,戒不虞).

For a question about love, the hexagram asks who you are gathering toward and whether you are being drawn there or merely crowding. Line two is the ideal: drawn in by sincere pull, unchanged. Line one wavers between the crowd and its true correlate; line three sighs for a circle that is already paired off; the top line weeps outside. A changing line in the lower trigram concerns your own commitment; one in the upper trigram concerns whether the one at the centre is trusted.

The hexagram in brief

The lake over the earth: waters gathering. Success; the king approaches the temple; see the great man — people gather around sincerity, and a great offering brings good fortune.

Bring people together around a worthy purpose, and prepare for the frictions that gathering brings.

The judgment

萃:亨。王假有廟,利見大人,亨,利貞。用大牲吉,利有攸往。

In (the state denoted by) Žhui, the king will repair to his ancestral temple. It will be advantageous (also) to meet with the great man; and then there will be progress and success, though the advantage must come through firm correctness. The use of great victims will conduce to good fortune; and in whatever direction movement is made, it will be advantageous.
