Hexagram 47, line 6
上六Line 6 of Confinement
Six at the top · 困 kùn
爻辭 The line text
困于葛藟,于臲卼,曰動悔。有悔,征吉。The sixth line, divided, shows its subject straitened, as if bound with creepers; or in a high and dangerous position, and saying (to himself), 'If I move, I shall repent it.' If he do repent of former errors, there will be good fortune in his going forward.
困于葛藟,未當也。動悔,有悔吉,行也。'He is straitened as if bound with creepers:'—(his spirit and action) are unsuitable. '(He says), "If I move, I shall repent of it." And he does repent (of former errors), which leads to good fortune:'—so he (now) goes on.
In plain words
At the top: 'confined by creeping vines, on a precarious perch, saying, moving brings regret; if there is repentance, going forward brings good fortune' (困於葛藟,於臲卼,曰動悔,有悔,徵吉). Yin at the extreme of Dui and of the whole hexagram, this is confinement at its end — the vines are soft and could be torn, the perch is high and unsteady, and what holds the line is its own conviction that any move will be regretted. The small Image turns the word around: the bonds are not fitting (未當也), and the regret that leads to good fortune is the kind that gets you walking (行也). The last line of Kun is the one that can leave, as soon as it stops telling itself it cannot.
If this line is changing
What is holding you now is thin and would give way if you pulled; the real confinement is your belief that any move is a mistake, so regret the delay, not the departure, and go.
Where the line stands
- A broken line, yin — written 六 (six), the number of an old yin line that moves when cast.
- It is in its correct place (當位): a yang line in an odd position or a yin line in an even one, which the tradition reads as a line at ease where it stands.
- It belongs to the upper trigram 兌 Dui (the Joyous) (lake).
- It has no correspondence (無應) with line 3: both lines are yin, so this line must find its support in its neighbours or in itself.
之卦 When this line moves
困 Confinement becomes ䷅ 6 訟 Dispute
Heaven above and water below, moving apart: contention. Sincerity is obstructed; a dispute may be won partway but ends badly if pushed to the finish.
