Hexagram 56 for work
Hexagram 56 Traveling for work and career
At work Lü is the hexagram of the outsider: the consultant, the new hire, the one doing business in a place whose rules they did not make. The Great Image gives the outsider's discipline — 'clear and careful in applying penalties, and not letting cases drag on' — because a stranger has no standing to be arbitrary. The judgment's 'small success' is honest: the traveller does not build empires, but conducts himself so as to be welcome.
The lines are the outsider's range. One fusses over small things and brings trouble on itself; two secures a base, means and one trustworthy ally, which is the model; three throws their weight around and loses both. Four has what it needs and knows it has no position. Five spends one arrow — a modest, visible contribution — and is rewarded with a role. Six rises too high for a guest and is burned. A changing line in the lower trigram is about how you establish yourself; one in the upper trigram is about whether you are content to be a traveller or trying to be a lord.
The hexagram in brief
Fire on the mountain: the wanderer who does not stay long. Small success; perseverance brings good fortune to the traveller — be modest, correct, and careful with your resources and companions.
Travel light, respect local ways, and keep your centre; a stranger's safety lies in good conduct.
The judgment
旅:小亨,旅貞吉。Lü intimates that (in the condition which it denotes) there may be some little attainment and progress. If the stranger or traveller be firm and correct as he ought to be, there will be good fortune.
