Why your zodiac animal begins at the Start of Spring (立春)

Ask when the Year of the Horse begins and most calendars give one of two answers: 1 January, or Chinese New Year. The Four Pillars tradition gives a third. In BaZi the year, and with it your zodiac animal, turns at the Start of Spring (立春), around 4 February, to the minute. Here is why, what it means if you were born in January or early February, and how the sixty-year cycle names each year.
Two calendars, two new years
China has long kept two calendars side by side.
- The lunar calendar (農曆) counts months from new moon to new moon. Its new year, the Spring Festival (春節), falls on a new moon between about 21 January and 20 February, so its date moves from year to year.
- The solar terms (節氣) divide the sun's yearly path into twenty-four equal steps of 15°. They follow the seasons, not the moon. The Start of Spring is the moment the sun reaches 315° of ecliptic longitude, which lands on 3, 4 or 5 February.
The stems and branches of BaZi belong to the solar side. Its months begin at the solar terms called 節 (the 寅 month at the Start of Spring, the 卯 month at 驚蟄, and so on), and the year pillar turns together with the first of them. Your zodiac animal is simply the branch of that year pillar, so it turns at the same instant. That is why our zodiac calculator and our BaZi charts both use the Start of Spring, and show Lunar New Year only for comparison.
The edge cases
- Born in January. The Start of Spring never falls in January, so by this rule you always belong to the previous year's animal. By Lunar New Year you might not: in 2028 the Spring Festival is on 26 January, so someone born on 30 January 2028 is a Monkey by the lunar calendar but still a Goat by the Start of Spring.
- Born in early February, before the Start of Spring. Also the previous animal. In 2026 the Start of Spring came on 4 February at 04:02 Beijing time, so a baby born in Beijing an hour earlier belongs to the Year of the Snake.
- Born between the Start of Spring and a late New Year. In 2026 the Spring Festival came on 17 February. A birth on 10 February 2026 is a Horse by the Start of Spring and a Snake by the lunar calendar.
- Time zones. The Start of Spring is one instant worldwide. In 2027 it falls on 4 February at 09:46 Beijing time, which is 20:46 on 3 February in New York. Someone born in New York at 21:00 that evening is already a Goat.
- No birth time. If you were born within about a day of the Start of Spring and don't know the time, either neighbouring animal is possible. Our calculator flags this rather than guessing.
Not every system agrees
Practice varies. Many popular calendars switch animals at Lunar New Year, and some systems are built on the lunar calendar itself. On this site, Zi Wei Dou Shu counts its year from the lunar new year, and the time method of Plum Blossom numerology uses the lunar year, as in its classical examples. A Zi Wei chart notes it when a birth falls between the two boundaries.
The sixty-year cycle
The ten Heavenly Stems and twelve Earthly Branches advance together, one step a year, and return to the same pair every sixty years (六十甲子). The animal comes from the branch. The element usually quoted comes from the stem (甲乙 wood, 丙丁 fire, 戊己 earth, 庚辛 metal, 壬癸 water), so each element covers two years in a row, yang then yin. 2026 is 丙午, the Fire Horse; 2027 is 丁未, the Fire Goat. The previous 丁未 year was 1967 and the next is 2087.
You may occasionally see a different element for the same year. That usually comes from the older 納音 (Na Yin) system, which gives each pair of years a poetic element of its own; for 丁未 it is "Water of the Heavenly River". The site names the element from the stem, as most calendars do.
2027, the year of the Fire Goat
丁未 begins at the Start of Spring on 4 February 2027, 09:46 Beijing time. Its stem 丁 is yin fire, a lamp rather than the sun; its branch 未 is the earth of late summer, holding the hidden stems 己 earth, 丁 fire and 乙 wood. Readers tend to describe it through warmth, care and the patience to tend things.
On the zodiac page you can see how 未 meets each animal. By the traditional relations to the year's branch (太歲), Goats meet their own birth-year branch (本命年), the Ox clashes with it, the Ox and the Dog meet it through a punishment, the Dog also through a break, and the Rat through a harm. The Horse combines with it, and the Rabbit and the Pig share its three-way harmony. These relations are traditionally read as cues for steadiness and good routines, not as threats.
Worked out from the exact instant
Your animal is computed in code from the exact instant of your birth and the solar-term tables, so a birth abroad close to the boundary lands on the right side of it. The AI writes the notes about your year from that result; it never decides which animal you are.
