䷤Hexagram 37 Household in love and relationships

Jia Ren is wind coming out of fire: warmth within that moves outward, the shape of a home. The Judgment says 'it is favourable for the woman to be steady', and the commentary explains the structure — the inner ruler at two and the outer ruler at five each in their correct place, answering each other. For a relationship this is the hexagram of building a household rather than of courtship: roles, habits, the daily arrangement of two lives, and the Great Image's rule that words should have substance and conduct should be consistent.

The lines describe the household's life stages. Line one sets gentle boundaries at the start, before habits harden; two does the sustaining inner work; three warns against both harshness and a home with no measure at all; four is the family quietly prospering; five is the partners truly present to one another, loving and unworried; six is the dignity of someone who governs by self-examination. A changing line in the lower trigram concerns the inner order of the relationship; in the upper, how it is led and how it feels from above.
