Hexagram 37, line 2
六二Line 2 of Household
Six in the second place · 家人 jiā rén
爻辭 The line text
无攸遂,在中饋,貞吉。The second line, divided, shows its subject taking nothing on herself, but in her central place attending to the preparation of the food. Through her firm correctness there will be good fortune.
六二之吉,順以巽也。'The good fortune attached to the second line, divided,' is due to the docility (of its subject), operating with humility.
In plain words
Taking nothing forward on her own account, attending to the food in the centre of the house: steadiness brings good fortune. Line two is yin, central and correct, the inner ruler of the hexagram — the Judgment's commentary says 'the woman has her correct place within', and this is that place. It corresponds to the strong line at five, the outer ruler, so the pairing of inside and outside that the hexagram is built on is complete here. 無攸遂 means not pursuing projects of one's own beyond the household; the small Image says the good fortune comes from 'compliance working through gentleness' (順以巽), the quality of the upper trigram Xun.
If this line is changing
Do the central, sustaining work of the household well and do not seek a separate stage for yourself right now; quiet competence in the inner place is what holds everything together.
Where the line stands
- A broken line, yin — written 六 (six), the number of an old yin line that moves when cast.
- It is in its correct place (當位): a yang line in an odd position or a yin line in an even one, which the tradition reads as a line at ease where it stands.
- It is central (中): the middle line of its trigram, the position the commentaries read as balanced and most favourable.
- It belongs to the lower trigram 離 Li (the Clinging) (fire).
- It corresponds (應) with line 5: one yin and one yang, the two lines answer each other across the hexagram.
